The expressionist artist aims to convey his experience of the depicted subject in his works. He seeks to achieve this through the aggressive deformation of forms and figures, as well as an emphasis on the uncultivated, archaic, and wild. The sublime is trivialized, the banal is heroized. Space and time are depicted in convolutions that contradict common physical notions, and a clear typification and metaphorization of the image objects obstructs access through empathetic identification. Traditional artistic forms are abandoned; expressionism rejects the seduction of the Tyrolean landscape towards the choice of naturalism as a mode of artistic design and follows the path of a destruction of well-established forms.
