“LIKE A FRENCH HORN SOUNDED IN A DREAM…”
Songs with horn by Schubert, Lachner, Netzer et al.
When the brothers Eduard Rudolf and Josef Rudolf Lewy, two of the most significant horn virtuosos of their time, came to Vienna in the 1820s, they created a great stir and made connections with the crème de la crème of the music scene in the Danube metropolis. Franz Schubert was also very impressed by the playing of the Lewy brothers. He composed the very demanding horn part for Josef Rudolf in “Auf dem Strom,” one of the most beautiful songs from Schubert's last year of life. The Schubert friend Franz Lachner, in turn, was inspired by this masterpiece for his own songs with horn accompaniment, as was the Tyrolean Josef Netzer, who established himself as a composer in Vienna in the 1830s. The German tenor Georg Poplutz and the pianist Annette Seiler, who lives in Tyrol and is an intimate connoisseur of the fortepiano treasures of the Ferdinandeum, interpret these Romantic treasures in an artistic partnership with the internationally renowned horn player Johannes Hinterholzer.
