Designs and photographs from the archive of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York reveal the innovative exhibition designs of René d'Harnoncourt, who was born in Vienna in 1901 and served as the director of MoMA from 1949 to 1968. A deep love for the artwork combined with drawing talent, but above all his self-developed method for installing exhibitions, made him, who had arrived in the New World as an “Austrian nobleman chemist,” an important exhibition organizer and museum director.
He created meticulous drawings of the objects to be exhibited, which he could even reconstruct from memory. He then considered exciting groupings of the works and drew detailed viewpoint designs to illustrate the perspective of the visitors.
