Restorer – A Profession with Many Facets
Valuable paintings, ancient books, contemporary art, and folk art objects: No matter which of these exhibits you encounter in the museum, the likelihood is high that it has already passed through the hands of a restorer. However, this is rarely for the purpose of actual restoration. The work of restorers in the museum sector today is much more diverse. They assess the condition of loans for exhibitions, define the specifications for packaging and transport, ensure framing, safe hanging, and aesthetic presentation of the exhibits. Additionally, there is ongoing work on the museum's own collection: researching and conserving. Depending on the material—be it stone, paper, metal, or textile—different expertise is required: How long can a delicate drawing hang in the light? How is a fragile wooden sculpture packaged? Or how can exquisite traditional costumes be protected from moth damage?
Dive into the fascinating world of restoration and conservation at the Ferdinandeum. During a tour, you will encounter the numerous and diverse projects that restorers have worked on in recent years. Watch our team live at work and learn how restorers truly operate.
Restoration in the Tyrolean State Museums
In the Tyrolean State Museums, restoration experts work on paintings, objects, paper and books, textiles, and folk art. The restoration studios are located in the Collection and Research Center in Hall. In the climate-controlled museum depots, several million objects, constituting a large part of the collection, are stored. The restorers ensure safe storage, conduct art technological research, and carry out conservation measures. For exhibitions, they oversee the creation of packaging and the transport of works. This ensures that valuable historical documents can be preserved for as long as possible.
