The expressionist artist seeks to convey his experience of what is depicted in his works. He strives to achieve this through the aggressive deformation of forms and figures, as well as by emphasizing the uncultivated, archaic, and wild. The sublime is trivialized, while the banal is heroized. Space and time are displayed in convolutions that contradict popular physical notions; a definite typification and metaphorization of the pictorial objects obstruct access through empathetic identification. Established artistic forms are abandoned; expressionism resists the allure of the Tyrolean landscape in favor of naturalism as a pictorial style and takes the path of a shattering of well-established forms.
