As court kapellmeister, the native Bavarian Johann Stadlmayr shaped the musical life at the Innsbruck court for several decades. Archduke Maximilian III, the Grand Master, took him into his service in 1607, and Archduke Leopold V and his wife Claudia de' Medici also bestowed their favor upon him, as did Archduke Ferdinand Karl in the end – they considered themselves fortunate to be able to keep such an outstanding and widely renowned composer at their court. For the Innsbruck Court Chapel and the specific possibilities at the Innsbruck court, Stadlmayr created sonorous works with colorful instrumentation. Particularly, the rich and finely differentiated brass instrumentation seems to have been a specificity of Innsbruck. The focus of our concert will be a concert mass and motets in which Stadlmayr experimented with the most diverse sound combinations.
