Augustin Grieninger

In the memory of posterity, Augustin Grieninger, who hails from Margreid on the South Tyrolean Wine Route, has been primarily known until recently as an original poet and writer; however, his contemporaries appreciated him far more as both a creative and performing musician. Until recently, most of his musical works were considered lost. Thanks to new discoveries, such as former holdings of the Royal Prussian Library in Berlin now located in Krakow, a more accurate picture of his compositional legacy can now be drawn: Augustin Grieninger, who worked at the Augustinian Canonry of Rottenbuch in southern Germany, is among the most interesting monastic composers of the High Baroque in the southern German-Austrian region. His sacred motets are a testament to a masterful command of compositional techniques and musical rhetoric, that is, the art of speaking in tones, as well as melodic inventiveness and a thorough knowledge of the latest stylistic developments in Italy. The ensemble vita & anima, composed of international specialists in early music, provides a comprehensive insight into Grieninger's sacred music for the first time – a true discovery!
